Filmed between 2007 and 2012, the film depicts daily routines of the volunteers working in Russian residential facilities for children with developmental disabilities, and in asylums for mentally disabled adult people. The volunteers belong to an NGO that promotes practices of care which are reluctantly accepted by the facilities' administration.
English subtitlesIn March 2020, when lockdown was about to start, the author asked his acquaintances from several places around the world to shoot short videos on their phones showing what was going on in their lives. Participants of the project sent their video diaries and could see each other's contributions on Vimeo. These materials have been used to make "The First Wave".
